Newsweek Ranks Wyndham Worldwide Among Top Green Companies
Newsweek magazine recently ranked Wyndham Worldwide among the top 100 greenest companies in America, as well as in the top 10 of its Media, Travel and Entertainment category. The Newsweek Green Rankings, the magazine's first such report, is based on the environmental footprint, policies and practices of America's 500 largest publicly traded companies as measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees.
Newsweek ranked Wyndham Worldwide number 81 on its list based on a number of criteria including greenhouse gas emissions, toxic waste emissions, use of other natural resources, management of environmental issues and policies, regulatory compliance and policies concerning climate change.
Wyndham Worldwide Parsippany, NJ Headquarters Becomes Certified by the EPA
Wyndham Worldwide has become a certified partner of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in efforts to reduce the risks associated with climate change by supporting technologies that are more sustainable for businesses and communities. The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to buy green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use. Wyndham Worldwide has agreed to purchase electricity from clean, renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydro facilities.
Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Central Florida Chapter Received 2009 LEED CI Project of the Year Award
The Board of Directors of the US Green Building Council, Central Florida Chapter selected Wyndham Vacation Ownership as the recipient of their 2009 LEED CI Project of the Year Award. Wyndham Vacation Ownership won Commercial Interiors Project of the Year by their 1400 Building interior that was designed using LEED standards for their IT team to work in.
Wyndham Hotels Receive Chain Leadership Award from Lodging Hospitality for Green Uniforms
Lodging Hospitality magazine has recognized Wyndham Hotels and Resorts for its innovative ecologically-friendly uniforms with a Chain Leadership Award. The U.S.-based award singled out Wyndham Hotels and Resorts as the leader in the category of Environmental Action. The front desk uniforms, manufactured by Cintas Corporation, are each made from 25 two-liter recycled plastic bottles and do not require professional laundering, minimizing the use of chemicals during cleaning. Wyndham Hotels and Resorts is the first national upscale lodging chain to implement the eco-friendly uniform initiative.

Wyndham Worldwide has been listed as one of FORTUNE Magazine's Most Admired Companies for 2009, ranking second in the Hotels, Casinos and Resorts category. Certification Levels Clarification
California Green Lodging Program
- Leadership Level- The highest level of participation, hotels with this certification must achieve a minimum field survey score of 300 out of a possible 357 points. They have an environmental policy in place and meet all seven of the programs criteria of Waste minimization, Reuse/recycling, Energy efficiency, Conservation and management, Waste management, Freshwater resource management, Hazardous materials management, and Environmentally and socially sensitive purchasing policies.
- Participation Level- achieved with a field survey score of 250 to 300, with an optional written environmental policy. A hotel with a participation level must meet a selection of the seven criteria and has three years from the date of certification to improve their green practices to rise to the Leadership Level.
- Certification in Progress- achieved when a hotel submits a survey to be considered for the certification program and is in the process of being reviewed.

Florida Green Lodging Program
- To obtain certification from the Florida Green Lodging Program, facilities must earn a minimum of 33 out of 81possible points. A property must have 23 required points and at least 10 points from any of the following six categories: Communication and Education, Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling, Water Conservation, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Air Quality, and Transportation. The Florida Green Lodging designation is valid for three years.

Green Lodging Michigan
- Leader Certification- achieved when a property has a total of at least 75 of a possible 115 points. All 10 required points must be met, and the property must obtain at least 3 points from each of the six categories which are Communication and Education, Air Quality, Energy Efficiency, Solid Waste Reduction, Toxic/Hazardous Waste, Water Conservation, and Purchasing. Certification is valid for three years.
- Steward Certification- achieved when a property has a total of at least 50 of a possible 115 points. All 10 required points must be met, and the property must obtain at least 3 points from each of the six categories. Certification is valid for three years.
- Partner Certification- achieved when a property has a total of at least 21 of a possible 115 points. All 10 required points must be met, and the property must obtain at least 3 points from each of the six categories. Certification is valid for three years.
- Applicant- achieved when a property is in the process of being reviewed

Rhode Island Hospitality Green Certification Program
- For a hotel to be certified by the Rhode Island Hospitality Green Program, the business must score at least 100 out of over 500 possible points. The categories for certification are Administrative Offices, Kitchen and Housekeeping Departments, Waste Management, Landscaping and Maintenance, Guest and Staff Rooms, Water Conservation, Energy, and Environmental Education. Certification is valid for two years, after which the business must increase their point total to a minimum of 130 points for recertification. If a business scores under 100 points, it is eligible for a provisional certification which gives the facility the benefits of a fully certified business if they agree to accumulate the remainder of the points within a certain time frame, usually 3 months.

Virginia Green Lodging
Virginia Green Lodging certifies properties that meet all of the following requirements:
- Offer Optional Linen Service,
- Provide the opportunity for guest to recycle with a written explanation of the opportunities
- Have a plan to use water efficiently (e.g. water-saving faucets, showerheads, and toilets, leak detection, and efficient landscape watering)
- Conserve energy with a plan that encourages the use of CFL bulbs, lighting sensors, and Energy Star rated equipment
- Offer a green events package for conferences, meetings, and other events that at minimum provides recycling at such events

Travel Green Wisconsin
- To become certified, an applicant must meet a list of basic requirements and get at least 30 out of a possible 139+ points in the categories of Communication and Education, Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling, Energy Efficiency, Conservation, and Management, Water Conservation and Wastewater Management, Air Quality, Wildlife and Landscape Conservation and Management, Transportation, Purchasing, and Local Community Benefits. The applicant must meet 5 required points in the Communication category, and the remaining 25 can be earned in any combination of the remaining sections. Certification is valid for one year.

Energy Star
- To qualify for the Energy Star, a property must track their energy usage in the Portfolio Manager, a tool on the EPA site. To determine the performance of a facility, EPA compares the date entered into the Portfolio Manager to the data provided by similar types of facilities and generates a score between 1 and 100. Buildings that receive a score of 75 or greater may qualify for the Energy Star. There must be at least 11 full consecutive

Green Globe Programme
The Green Globe Programme focuses on the following areas:
- Reduction in green house gas emissions
- Energy efficiency, conservation and management
- Reduction in the consumption of fresh water and resources
- Ecosystem conservation and management
- Support for local community development
- Improved management of social and cultural issues
- Improved land use planning and management
- Improved air quality and noise reduction
- Improved waste water management
- Waste minimization, reuse and recycling
- Certified (Platinum) - Achieved after being Green Globe Certified at least ten continuous years.
- Certified (Gold) - Achieved after being Green Globe Certified at least five continuous years.
- Certified (Silver) - Achieved after benchmarking, an organization uses a Self Assessment Checklist to document their compliance with relevant legislation, the implementation of their sustainable approach, performance outcomes, and how they communicate with interested parties.3
- Benchmarked (Bronze) - Achieved after an organization establishes a Sustainability policy and completes a Benchmarking Assessment to be assessed under a set criteria.

ISO 9001: 2000 Certification
- The ISO 9001:2000 specifies requirements for a quality management green criteria system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system. All requirements of this standard are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations

LEED
- To obtain a Platinum Certification in LEED for Commercial Interiors, a property must obtain above 80 out of 100 possible points in the categories of Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process, in addition to meeting six required points
- To obtain a Gold Certification in LEED for Commercial Interiors, a property must obtain between 60 to 79 out of 100 possible points in addition to meeting six required points.
- To obtain a Silver Certification in LEED for Commercial Interiors, a property must obtain between 50 to 59 out of 100 possible points in addition to meeting six required points.
- To receive a Certified designation from LEED for Commercial Interiors, a property must obtain a property must obtain between 40 to 49 out of 100 possible points in addition to meeting six required points.

Canada Green Key Eco-Rating Program
To be certified by the Canada Green Key Eco-Rating Program, a property must complete an audit consisting of five sections-Corporate Environmental Management, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage Operations, Conference & Meeting Facilities and Engineering. There are over 140 multiple choice questions throughout these sections regarding the following areas: Energy conservation, Water conservation, Solid waste management, Hazardous waste management, Indoor air quality, Community outreach, Building infrastructure, Land use, and Environmental management. The on-line audit then automatically generates a rating for the property. To remain certified a property must reapply to the program on an annual basis.
- 5 Keys- achieved by obtaining 80-100% on the rating system. A hotel that attains 5 Keys demonstrates the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility. Sustainable policies, technologies, and programs are a standard at these properties.
- 4 Keys- achieved by obtaining 60-79.9% on the rating system. Property shows national industry leadership with a commitment to protecting the environment through policies and practices that impact management, employees, guests, and the public.
- 3 Keys- achieved by obtaining 40-59.9% on the rating system. A hotel with this rating has taken significant steps to protect the environment with numerous programs in place that benefit the environment and local community.
